ADB-Japan Scholarship Program for Developing Countries in Asia and Pacific

The Asian Development Bank-Japan Scholarship Program (ADB-JSP) aims to provide an opportunity for well-qualified citizens of ADB’s developing member countries to undertake postgraduate studies in economics, management, science and technology, and other development-related fields at participating academic institutions in the Asian and Pacific Region.  Upon completion of their study programs, scholars are expected to contribute to the economic and social development of their home countries.

Eligibility:

1. A national of an ADB borrowing member country (applicants from countries that are no longer borrowing from ADB are not eligible for the ADB-JSP Scholarship).

2. Gained admission to an approved MA/PhD course at an academic institution .

3. A bachelor’s degree or its equivalent with superior academic record.

4. At least two (2) years of full-time professional working experience (acquired after a university degree) at the time of application. Proficiency in oral and written English communication skills to be able to pursue studies.

5. Not more than 35 years old at the time of application. In exceptional cases, for programs which are appropriate for senior officials and managers, the age limit is 45 years old.

6. In good health.

7. Should agree to return to his/her home country after completion of studies under the Program.

8. Executive Directors, Alternate Directors, management and staff of ADB, consultants, and relatives of the aforementioned are not eligible for the Scholarship.

9. Staff of academic institutions are not eligible for the Scholarship.

10. Applicants living or working in a country other than his/her home country are not eligible for scholarships.

11. ADB-JSP does not support applicants who are already enrolled in graduate degree programs.

12. ADB-JSP does not sponsor undergraduate studies, distance learning programs, short-term training, conferences, seminars, thesis writing, and research projects.

Applicants should request information and application forms from the chosen Academic Institution and should indicate to that Institution that they are applying for admission and that they would like to be considered for the ADB-JSP Scholarship. The completed Institution application form and required documentation, including the ADB-JSP Information Sheet form, should be submitted to the academic institution. No separate application to ADB is necessary.

Students interested in the pre-university diploma will normally be aged between 15 and 17 years old at the application stage and have already completed 10 or 11 years of formal education. The teaching language of these colleges is English, with the exception of UWC Costa Rica which is bilingual – Spanish and English.  Previous knowledge of the teaching language is not usually necessary. The colleges will offer support if you do not have previous language knowledge.

Agricultural training

Simón Bolívar UWC is a tertiary agricultural college and to be eligible to apply students are normally between the ages of 17-18 and are already high school graduates. The teaching language at Simón Bolívar UWC is Spanish.

Singapore Government Scholarships for Southeast Asians

The Singapore Scholarship is a Government to Government Scholarship for students who are citizens of ASEAN member countries (except Singapore) and is for a full-time undergraduate study at the Singapore university (NUS, NTU or SMU).

Under the Singapore Scholarship, the Singapore Government will not impose any bond on the scholars. However, all scholars are expected to return home at the end of their studies in Singapore to contribute to the development of their country.

One economy class air ticket from scholar’s home country to Singapore at the commencement of their undergraduate course and one economy class air ticket from Singapore to their home country upon successful completion of their undergraduate course. No further financial assistance will be provided for other travel expenses as well as any additional expenses/fees incurred during the Overseas’ Exchange Programme, Overseas’ Attachments or Summer Courses taken up by the scholars with their respective universities.

Scholarship Criteria:

The scholarship is awarded based on merit. Candidates must have an outstanding academic record, a good command of English and meet the entry requirements for the universities. Shortlisted candidates have to sit for an entrance exam and interview at the respective ASEAN countries except for candidates from Brunei and Malaysia who will only sit for the interview.

Application for the Singapore Scholarship must be submitted on the prescribed application form. Please contact the Singapore Embassy/High Commission/Consulate-General in your capital city for a copy of the Singapore Scholarship brochure and application form. Applicants will be required to submit a typed-written essay of about 300-500 words.  All supporting documents have to be attached.

Applications must be endorsed and submitted by their respective ASEAN Governments (see contact information below). Application for the Singapore Scholarship for Academic Year 2010/2011 will be open from 16 November 2009 to 14 December 2009, except for Brunei & Malaysia. Application for Brunei and Malaysia will be open in March 2010 after the respective results for the General Certificate of Education Advanced Level and Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) are released.

Please also note that most shortlisted nominees will take the entrance examinations set by NTU or NUS. All shortlisted nominees will also have to undergo an interview conducted by interviewers from NTU , NUS and SMU.

Brief description:

The Asia Research Institute of NUS invites applications from citizens of Asian countries enrolled for a fulltime advanced degree at a university in an Asian country (except Singapore) for consideration for the award of Asian Graduate Student Fellowships. These fellowships are offered to current graduate students doing their Master’s or PhD degrees and working in the Humanities and Social Sciences on Southeast Asian topics, and will allow the recipients to be based at NUS for an ‘in residence fellowship’ for a period of three months.

The aim of the fellowship is to enable scholars to make full use of the wide range of resources held in the libraries of NUS and the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies. Scholars will be expected to commence on 3 May 2010, and to make a presentation on their work at the Singapore Graduate Forum on Southeast Asian Studies at the end of July 2010.
